I get great satisfaction from collecting things that others don't want and turning them into something they do!
This might involve beachcombing, scouting around boot sales and charity shops or finding things others have dumped by the bins for our flats because they can't be bothered to take them for recycling!
For me the most lucrative option has been asking businesses to see what they are throwing out. There is a paper warehouse close to me and I found out that if a ream of paper or card is slightly damaged it has to be thrown away. I have made literally hundreds of cards using lovely quality materials collected from there and love the fact that I am able to save it from being wasted.
Most of the mosaics I've made using materials waiting to be dumped by tile shops. Again, any over orders, part boxes, broken tiles within a box, old stock, samples etc can be found languishing in the bins which I used to be allowed to scavenge from in several locations. It was like being let loose in a sweet shop for me! Sadly health and safety rules now usually prevent this so much lovely useful material is wasted and the business has to pay to add it to landfill. Just one more example of our crazy world...
